The Perfect Pen

The perfect pen is not found in a pack of 12 at the grocery store check-out. Our handmade pens are designed with variety in mind.

No two people are the same. We each have different personalities, different tastes, different hands and different handwriting. A high-quality pen not only feels great, but also looks great on your desk, in your shirt pocket, or in your hand while signing important documents. We understand this.

Each on of our extraordinary writing instruments begins as raw material. We use mainly exotic woods from all around the globe, however we sometimes use domestic species as well. On occasion we have selected other raw materials such as acrylic acetate, deer antler or corn cobs.

Once the raw material for a pen has been chosen, a complimentary set of hardware components is also selected to match the raw material. Some woods work best with gold hardware, and others work better with chrome or silver. The hardware for the pen decides not only the metallic components, but also the form and general shape and size of the pen.

With all the pieces of the pen selected and ready, the raw material is formed using a lathe. The wood is turned to shape, sanded and the finished. It is during this time that the work of our expert craftsmen really shines. The key components of a great pen can be found in three categories, which we've called the Three F's: Form, Fit and Finish.

The form of the pen is the overall shape of the pen. Awkward bulges and harsh lines are distracting and not aesthetically pleasing. It takes a keen eye to craft a pleasing pen that not only looks great, but feels great.

The fit of your pen refers to the way that the pen fits into the hardware. A nice pen will have have a gentle curve and meet up precisely with the metal hardware. If the hardware is slightly higher or lower than the raw material, the pen will not be suitable for sale. It takes precise measurements to make sure that the pen material meets up exactly with the hardware.

The finish of your pen is the last step to complete the process and it is often the most time-consuming. Applying a high-gloss finish adds depth and detail to the grain of the wood used in your pen. This finish is applied in several coats (sometimes 12 or more coats of finish are applied). After each coat has dried, the pen is sanded again and buffed to a high-gloss shine.

Once your material has been finished, the final pen is assembled and your pen is ready for purchase. It is photographed, cataloged, and added to this web site. Why not browse our pens right now and find a pen that suits you?
